It has been a very exciting year for the Club.

We organised our first ever Event in Rouken Glen Park in August. PAWS IN THE PARK was a huge success with lots of fun for everyone. Our main ring demonstrations included heelwork to music, flyball, parades by Glasgow Dogs Trust and Greyhound Awareness League and a doggie fashion show by The Pet Stop in Giffnock. Creature Comforts Pet Shop in Clarkston and Burns Pet Food sponsored our very popular Dog Show. The classes attracted a large number of dogs. There was a variety of stallholders and dog and cat rescue stalls. There was also the chance to “have a go” at some of the demonstrations i.e. flyball, lure coursing, hwtm. The Dogs Trust organised a “doggie dash” which was enjoyed by all the dogs and their owners! There was mini fun agility suitable for all types and ages of dogs and basic obedience tests with certificates and rosettes. Sarah and Richard from Rouken Glen Vets were also on hand to give out information and advice . Hopefully we will be able to repeat the event in the future.

We have had two stars in our midst this year with the BBC Comedy unit using Pisces belonging to Emma in one of their sketches and Holly owned by Trish starring in the Glasgow Light Operatic Society’s Show, Anything Goes in the Theatre Royal.

The Charities this year who have benefited from the Club are Greyhound awareness League and Canine Concern Scotland Trust. We also donated 125 fleeces which were collected during the months of November and December from our members to give every dog in Glasgow Dogs Trust a new blanket for Christmas

During the month of April we took part in National Pet Month and raised approximately £100 with our “Chuck it in the Bucket”. We also helped out at the Vet School Rodeo again this year and raised more funds for the Small Animal Clinic and were invited to attend their Opening Ceremony in October with a tour of the new state of the art building.

In July we organised the agility for Glasgow Dogs Trust , in October, some of our members took part in Waggy Walks and in December we helped at their Christmas Fayre raising even more funds for the Centre.

Greenbank Church Show in November raised £100 each for The New Small Animal clinic at Glasgow Vet School and Glasgow Dogs Trust.

Our thanks to everyone for recommending our services and we wish you all a good and prosperous New Year.

Val Burns and all the Committee at Glasgow Dog Training Club

January 2010.

Every year at Glasgow Dog Training Club we like to donate a new fleece to every dog at the Glasgow Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre.  As we know the Dogs Trust never put a healthy dog down and we like to bring a little bit of extra comfort and happiness to these less fortunate pups.

To achieve this we must rely on the generosity of our members and as such we would like to ask you all to help us gather 106 new fleeces for donation this year.  We’re not looking for anything expensive, Primark do great ones for £1.99.  We really appreciate any help you can give us to reach our 106 target and i’m sure the dogs will appreciate it even more.

Thanks

Glasgow Dog Training Club Committee

Another year over already!

It is with deep regret that in January we lost a dear friend and committee member at the Club. Barbara was a vibrant person, full of fun and enthusiasm and is sorely missed. When her dog Harvey was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of 2, Barbara was devastated. She would be pleased to see him today still running round the park despite his three legs. The Club has erected a Cherry Blossom tree in the Sensory Garden in Rouken Glen Park in her memory. We have also donated a bench in her name to Glasgow Dogs Trust for whom Barbara supported in many ways.

We have had a really busy year attending various different events with our agility/obstacle course to raise funds for various charities. In April we were at the Vet School Rodeo, in June it was Rouken Glen Park, July, Tollcross Park, August Pollok Family Fun Day and November in Greenbank Church where the money was split between SSPCA and Dogs Trust. We also spent a very wet day at Calderglen Country Park raising funds for the Pet Fostering Service.

George, our Chairman has made new agility equipment for the Club in our new colours and as you can see above, we also have a new logo. We now have a blog on our web site of all our events and our thanks goes to Susan for setting this up and to Paul for taking the photos.

We have introduced a monthly award for the Dog and Handler who have improved the most. The winners receive a trophy to keep and their picture on the blog. We have also introduced six week beginner courses on Tuesday nights with a limited number of dogs in each class.

Our events this year have included T-Touch Workshops, Heelwork to Music Workshops, two First Aid Workshops and an Aromatherapy Workshop.

Our sponsored walk for Canine Concern Scotland Trust in October this year raised approximately £900. There was a good turnout despite the wet weather and everyone had fun.

Our Halloween parties were great fun with the usual enthusiasm especially from the Advanced Class in making costumes for themselves and their dogs. The Christmas parties were excellent as usual with Santa Paws being a big hit and a scrumptious buffet donated by Trish’s work, The Thistle Hotel.

We are in the process of planning a “doggie” event in August next year in Rouken Glen Park. There will be a dog show, fun agility/obstacle course, pony rides, stalls, demonstrations and much, much more. If anyone would like to be involved, please contact one of the Committee Members for further information.

Many thanks for all your recommendations over the past year and we wish you all a prosperous New Year.
